Over 3.2m residents benefit from Kaduna’s free CNG mass transit scheme, gov’t says

No fewer than 3.2 million residents have so far benefited from the Kaduna State Government’s free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit scheme, an initiative launched to ease transportation costs and improve commuting across the state.
The Acting Managing Director of Kaduna Line and Acting Director General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, disclosed this during an inspection tour of newly constructed bus stops in Kaduna.
Ibrahim highlighted the project as a central pillar of Governor Uba Sani’s administration, designed to deliver safe, affordable, and eco-friendly public transit to citizens.
According to Ibrahim, the state is currently constructing 200 modern bus stops to support a fleet of 100 CNG-powered buses operating daily across designated routes.
“We are at one of the CNG transport bus stops today to witness the transport infrastructure development undertaken by His Excellency over the past three years.
“About 200 bus stops are under construction statewide to support the 100 CNG buses already deployed,” Ibrahim said.
He noted that one major route alone—stretching from Rigachikun through Kawo to Sabon Tasha serves over 30 communities, providing seamless access for thousands of daily commuters.
Highlighting the financial relief to households, the KADSTRA chief revealed that the free transit scheme has saved residents over N3.5 billion in transportation costs within its first year of operation.
He added that onstruction progress remains steady, with over 80 percent of the planned bus stops already completed.
According to him, to ensure high operational standards and passenger safety, the entire mass transit system has been fully integrated with modern digital technology.
“The buses are equipped with Intelligent Transport System (ITS) devices, making them fully computerized. Through our control center, we can monitor each vehicle and bus stop in real-time for effective management and security,” he explained.
Ibrahim reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing all pending infrastructure and announced plans to expand the free CNG bus service to Zaria and Kafanchan as soon as local CNG refueling stations are operational.
