Why Does Every Rak’ah Have Two Sujood?

Date:

Every rak’ah of salah has two sujood, yet many of us have never stopped to ask why? Is it just a ritual?
No. Sujood is the closest a servant comes to Allah. The Prophet (SAW) said:
“The closest a servant comes to his Lord is while he is in prostration, so increase your supplications.”
Sahih Muslim

But why two prostrations?
Scholars have reflected on a beautiful reminder found in the Qur’an. Allah says:
“From the earth We created you, into it We will return you, and from it We will bring you out once again.” Qur’an 20:55

Some scholars mention that the two sujood beautifully remind us of our journey: We came from the earth. We will return to the earth. And we will be raised again by Allah.

Between the two prostrations, we sit and say: “Rabbighfir lī, Rabbighfir lī” (My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me).

It is as if Allah, The Most High teaches us that between our beginning and our end, our greatest need is His mercy and forgiveness.
Every time your forehead touches the ground, remember: You are lowering yourself before the One who will raise you. You are placing the noblest part of your body on the lowest part of the earth. You are declaring that true honor is found in humility before Allah, The Majestic and your Fashioner.
The next time you make sujood, don’t rush it. It may be the moment your sins are forgiven, your du’as are accepted, and your heart is brought closest to its Creator.
May Allah make us among those who find peace, humility, and closeness to Him in every sujood. Āmèen.
