Anti-Kidnapping, Human Trafficking, Child Abuse and Drug Abuse (AKH-TRACADA), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed Bill for the establishment of state police for effective security system that will improve and promote Nigerian security architecture.

AKH-TRACADA in a statement released Tuesday in Abuja signed by its Founder and National Coordinator, Primate Belonwu Ezeanyaeche noted that President Tinubu’s proposal to establish state police represents a significant opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve public safety across the federation.

According the statement, “As the nation continues to face diverse security challenges, there is growing recognition that policing strategies should be responsive to local realities. State police, operating within a clear constitutional and legal framework, could enhance intelligence gathering, improve response times, and foster closer collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

“AKH-TRACADA is of the conviction that decentralizing aspects of policing would allow states to better address security concerns unique to their environments while complementing the efforts of national police. A locally accountable police service has the potential to improve crime prevention, strengthen public trust, and promote more effective community policing.

“At the same time, the success of any state police system will depend on robust safeguards to protect citizens’ rights and uphold the rule of law. These should include clear constitutional provisions, independent oversight mechanisms, professional recruitment and training standards, transparent funding arrangements, and accountability measures to prevent political interference or abuse of power.

There is no doubt the proposal presents an opportunity for constructive national dialogue involving federal and state governments, the National Assembly, civil society organizations, traditional institutions, security experts, and citizens. Broad consultation will be essential in designing a system that reflects Nigeria’s federal structure while preserving national unity and constitutional principles.

“A well-designed state police framework can complement existing federal institutions, improve coordination among security agencies, and contribute to a safer environment that supports economic growth, investment, and sustainable development.

“AKH-TRACADA will always support thoughtful and proactive reforms that strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to protect lives and property. With appropriate legal safeguards, adequate oversight, and a commitment to professionalism, the establishment of state police can become an important milestone in building a more secure and resilient nation” the statement concluded.

Recall that penultimate week, President Tinubu in response to rising insecurity and consequent calls by Nigeria to tackle it, sent an Executive Bill entitled: “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Altercation) (Police Bill) 2026 to House of Representatives seeking to alter the constitution to establish state police in the country. He went on to urge Reps to expedite its passage, stating that decentralized policing is an important pillar of his security reform.
