Catholic Laity backs Onaiyekan, urges Presidency to embrace constructive dialogue

The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria (CLCN) has thrown its weight behind Cardinal John Onaiyekan following criticism from the Presidency over his recent remarks on President Bola Tinubu’s engagement with Catholic bishops.
The council said the former Archbishop of Abuja acted out of patriotism and a sense of moral responsibility, insisting that his comments were aimed at drawing attention to issues affecting the country rather than attacking the Federal Government.
In a statement jointly signed by its National President, Ambrose Obioha, and Secretary-General, Francis Olayinka Ojo, the CLCN described Onaiyekan as a man of peace and integrity whose intervention was intended to “call the nation to conscience.”
The group maintained that the Catholic Church has a duty to speak on matters of justice, good governance and the welfare of citizens, adding that disagreements over facts should not be mistaken for political hostility.
It also argued that while private meetings deserve respect, discussions touching on national issues such as security, the economy and justice are of public interest and should not remain permanently confidential.
According to the council, Onaiyekan did not reveal confidential information but merely reflected the Church’s moral concerns and the government’s response in line with its pastoral mission.
The CLCN called on both the Presidency and the Church to sustain constructive engagement for Nigeria’s benefit, stressing that the country needs cooperation between political leaders and moral institutions.
The council also reaffirmed its support for Onaiyekan and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, urging Nigerians to continue praying for the nation’s leaders while supporting efforts to improve security, justice and economic well-being.
