Police summon VeryDarkMan over misconduct allegations against AIG

The Nigeria Police Force has officially responded to public commentary and social media posts by online activist Martins Vincent Otse (popularly known as VeryDarkMan), affirming its commitment to the rule of law while summoning Otse to substantiate allegations made against the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police, Zone 2, Lagos, AIG Moshood Jimoh.
In a statement issued on Tuesday Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, outlined the dual administrative and judicial actions underway and cautioned against attempting to enforce disciplinary outcomes through media campaigns.
Iniedu said on July 30, 2026, the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja officially invited Otse to appear at its headquarters to provide evidence supporting his public claims.
Confirming that no officer is above internal scrutiny, the Force revealed that the AIG in charge of Force CID has summoned AIG Jimoh for questioning regarding the allegations.
The Police stressed that the underlying criminal matter raised in the commentary was investigated and is currently before a court of competent jurisdiction following advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Force stated it will not try the case in the media or allow public sentiment to sway judicial outcomes.
While acknowledging the constitutional right to free expression and constructive criticism, the Force warned against using public defamation or unsubstantiated claims to bypass established legal and administrative frameworks.
“Discipline within the Nigeria Police Force is governed by the Constitution… the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, and Force Orders.
“Freedom of expression does not extend to defamation or the amplification of unsubstantiated allegations as a means of compelling disciplinary outcomes outside due process,” the statement read.
The Police cautioned that while officers found culpable following due process will face sanctions, the institution reserves the right to pursue legal remedies against false accusations designed to damage individual or institutional reputations.
Also, the Police urged Otse to honour the FCID invitation and allow both the judicial process and administrative reviews to proceed through established oversight channels.
