Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday officiated the mass wedding of 1,500 widows and young women under the state government’s Mass Wedding Programme, coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board.
The initiative marks the seventh edition of the mass wedding programme since its inception in 2012, according to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Governor Yusuf described the programme as a significant social intervention designed to restore hope, strengthen families and promote moral values across Kano State.
He said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens by reducing the financial burden associated with marriage and providing opportunities for dignified family life in accordance with Islamic principles and Kano’s cultural values.
During the marriage solemnisation, Governor Yusuf represented the first groom and formally sought the bride’s hand in marriage from her guardian, the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The Emir accepted the proposal in accordance with Islamic injunctions, paving the way for the solemnisation.
Earlier, the Emir delivered the Friday sermon, urging the newly married couples to build their homes on the values of faith, patience, mutual respect and compassion.
He emphasised that peaceful and stable families are fundamental to building a prosperous and cohesive society.
The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said the beneficiaries underwent screening and counselling before the wedding.
According to him, the necessary religious and legal requirements were fulfilled before the marriages were conducted.
The Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahraddeen, offered prayers for divine guidance, blessings and lasting peace in the homes of the newly married couples.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf and the Kano State Government, describing the initiative as a life-changing opportunity that had enabled them to begin a new chapter with dignity and hope.
The Kano mass wedding programme is part of the state government’s broader social welfare initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens, strengthening family institutions and promoting a peaceful and cohesive society.
