TotalEnergies has announced plans to boost gas supply to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited as its Ubeta and Ima projects advance towards production.
The French energy company said the Ubeta deepwater project was on course to deliver first oil in 2027, while the Ima shallow-water offshore field was expected to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2028.
The projects are expected to provide additional gas feedstock for NLNG’s Train-7 project currently under construction at Bonny Island, Rivers State.
The Deputy Managing Director, Deepwater Assets, TotalEnergies E&P Nigeria Limited, Victor Bandele, disclosed this at a panel session during the Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition 2026 in Lagos.
Bandele attributed the progress to investment incentives introduced by the Federal Government in 2023 and 2024 to encourage gas development.
He said the incentives had encouraged TotalEnergies and other operators to sanction new projects.
“I am happy today to speak about projects that have matured because of the shift in processes,” Bandele said.
He disclosed that TotalEnergies took the Final Investment Decision on the Ubeta project in 2024.
“The Ubeta project is ongoing as we speak. It is one of the projects with the highest local content, as many Nigerian companies are participating.
“And Ubeta should be in production next year. So, incentives improved; projects sanctioned and projects will be delivered,” he said.
Bandele said the company was also working towards concluding the FID for the Ima project with its partner.
“The FID is imminent, and first oil is planned for Q4, 2028,” he added.
The Ubeta field is located in OML 58, about 80 kilometres offshore Port Harcourt, while the Ima field is located offshore Port Harcourt under the AMNI/TotalEnergies Joint Venture.
Each project is expected to produce up to 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, translating to about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
The gas from both projects is expected to be supplied as feedstock to NLNG, whose Train-7 expansion is designed to increase the company’s LNG production capacity.
Bandele said the projects represented a shift towards increased investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector following the introduction of new incentives.
He recalled that after TotalEnergies commenced production from the Egina deepwater field in 2018, no major deepwater project had subsequently come on stream, which he attributed to the lack of sufficient investment incentives.
In August 2025, TotalEnergies, Shell and NNPC Limited, alongside other gas producers, agreed to supply 1.29 billion cubic feet of gas feedstock daily to NLNG.
The additional gas from Ubeta and Ima is expected to strengthen feedstock availability as Nigeria pushes to expand its LNG production capacity.
