The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing maternal and child health across the territory through expanded public education on exclusive breastfeeding and infectious disease prevention.
The commitment was highlighted by Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (FCT-HSES), during a recent joint press briefing and town hall meeting held at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) Conference Hall.
Speaking on the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” Dr. Fasawe emphasized the importance of expanding proven health policies, institutional frameworks, and community-level initiatives.
“Six months of exclusive breastfeeding, followed by proper complementary feeding, is a cost-effective intervention that significantly reduces infant mortality, malnutrition, and stunting,” Dr. Fasawe stated, describing optimal early nutrition as one of the safest and most life-saving public health strategies available.
The town hall meeting also focused on strengthening local defenses against infectious diseases through proactive community engagement and preventative healthcare measures.
The event brought together key public health figures and partner organizations, including representatives from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Mobihealth International, and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside healthcare professionals, development partners, and traditional and religious leaders across the FCT.
