FCT RUWASSA commissions gender-friendly toilet facility in Kwaita community

The Federal Capital Territory Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Directorate (FCT RUWASSA) has commissioned a gender-friendly public toilet facility in Kwaita Community, located within the Kwali Area Council of Abuja.

Representing RUWASSA Director Dr. (Mrs.) Joyce Chinyere Echoke, the Head of Department for Water Quality, Monitoring, and Analysis, Mr. Danladi Umar Katampe, officially inaugurated the facility.

It was gathered that the the initiative aligns with Executive Order 009, which aims to eliminate open defecation across Nigeria.

FCT RUWASSA targets declaring Kwali Area Council Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Echoke urged residents to ensure proper maintenance, cleanliness, and long-term functionality of the facility.

Kwali Area Council Chairman, Hon. Nuhu Daniel, commended FCT RUWASSA and project partners—WaterAid Nigeria, Foundation for Sanitation Improvement (FSI), and Black Pelican Limited.

To support smooth operations, the Kwali Chairman donated a new power generator to the local managing cooperative.

Stressing the need for gender-inclusive management, WaterAid Nigeria Country Director Evelyn Mere (represented by Head of Programme Mr. Napet Chuktu) highlighted the necessity of community-led systems and emphasized the vital role of women’s leadership in sustaining development infrastructure.
