The Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen has warned against converting the pedestrian bridges across the country into trading zones as there will be sanctions against such actions.

The minister said this on Tuesday in Benin-City, Edo state when he commissioned four road infrastructure projects consisting of two bridges constructed on Okio River and Weppa River, the Ekperi-Fuggar

Road off Auchi Polytechnic-Ekperi-Agenebode Road, and a pedestrian bridge at Auchi Polytechnic Main Gate, all in Edo State.

“The pedestrian bridge most importantly will drastically reduce fatality on the roads”, he said.

Arch. Onolememen emphasised that the projects were embarked upon in fulfillment of the campaign promises of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure safety of lives, property, improved road infrastructure and replacement of sub-standard bridges across the nation.

He said the President gave approval for the provision of a pedestrian bridge at the Polytechnic main gate and also the construction of the two bridges with longer spans to ensure durability of the structures and safety of users.

He urged the communities to guard the projects and remain faithful as the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan is still on course.

The Minister thanked the contractor, Messrs Mothercat Construction Company Nigeria Limited, speedy completion of work on the projects within the agreed timeframe and also on the quality of works, adding that the projects would bestow significant safety benefits to communities and the general public.
