From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

The Kano State Government says it has completed 867 of the 1,557 projects being implemented across the state in the past three years under the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf.

The Commissioner for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation, Nura Iro Maaji, disclosed this at a press conference in Kano on Sunday.

Maaji said the 867 completed projects represented 55.68 per cent of the total projects, while 654 projects, representing 42 per cent, are ongoing.

He added that 26 projects, representing 1.66 per cent, are at the award stage, while 10 projects, representing 0.64 per cent, have been planned and are ready for award.

According to the commissioner, the projects have a cumulative contract value of ₦996.29 billion, while ₦695.20 billion has been approved through No Objection Certificates (NOCs).

He said the ministry had also vetted payment certificates worth ₦444.75 billion, describing the figures as an indication of the scale of the administration’s capital investment programme and the financial oversight being applied to the projects.

Maaji explained that the projects were spread across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with 598 projects valued at approximately ₦299.36 billion located in the eight metropolitan LGAs.

The remaining 36 rural LGAs account for 653 projects valued at about ₦287.90 billion, he said.

He added that cross-cutting projects covering multiple LGAs were valued at approximately ₦159.50 billion, while statewide and other projects accounted for about ₦249.54 billion.

The commissioner said the distribution of projects demonstrated the administration’s focus on rural development.

> “This shows that the government’s development agenda extends beyond the metropolitan area to include rural roads, healthcare facilities, schools, housing, feeder roads and other essential infrastructure,” he said.

Major Projects

Highlighting some of the major projects captured in the government’s portfolio, Maaji mentioned the mass housing scheme at Rijiyar Gwangwan in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, awarded at approximately ₦113.19 billion.

Other projects listed include the ₦24.77 billion Katsina Road expansion, ₦21.90 billion Modern Cities infrastructure programme, ₦27.74 billion Madobi–Yako–Kafin Maiyaki/Kiru Road intervention, and the ₦22 billion Rural Model City Project covering the state’s 36 rural LGAs.

On financial oversight, the commissioner clarified that the ₦444.75 billion payment figure represented payment certificates duly vetted by the ministry.

He said the portfolio covered ongoing, recently awarded and planned projects.

Maaji assured residents that the government would continue to monitor project implementation, address bottlenecks and ensure that public funds were deployed responsibly.

“The government remains committed to ensuring that these investments translate into measurable improvements in the lives of the teeming citizens and residents alike,” he said.

He also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing that projects would be monitored from procurement through implementation to completion.

“At this ministry, we will continue to ensure that projects are monitored from procurement through implementation to completion and that payment certification is linked to verified project execution,” he said.

The commissioner said the data showed that Kano State was undertaking a large-scale development programme, with significant progress already recorded, while stressing the need for continued monitoring, financial discipline and timely completion of projects.
