The Kano State Government is exploring innovative and sustainable approaches to solid waste management as part of efforts to address environmental challenges and improve the wellbeing of residents.

The government made this known on Thursday when it received a proposal from Certis Africa, a waste management company, on ways to improve the management and recycling of solid waste generated across the Kano metropolis.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, received the company’s delegation during a meeting in Kano.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s management on Friday, Hashim said the state government was considering practical solutions to the growing challenge of solid waste disposal, with particular emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly methods.

According to the statement, Certis Africa presented a proposal to commence a pilot waste management project in a cluster within one of the densely populated communities in the state.

The proposed initiative is based on the circular economy model, under which waste materials would be sorted, recycled and converted into useful products.

The company said the approach could help create employment opportunities, stimulate economic activities and contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

The commissioner expressed satisfaction with the proposal and welcomed the initiative, assuring the delegation of the state government’s willingness to explore areas of collaboration that could lead to a more effective and sustainable waste management system.

Hashim said the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remained committed to finding practical solutions to environmental challenges, particularly the increasing volume of solid waste generated within the metropolis.

He said the government would continue to support initiatives capable of improving environmental sanitation and promoting sustainable development across the state.

Those who attended the meeting included the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, the Managing Director of the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), representatives of Certis Africa and relevant directors of the ministry.

The meeting ended with an agreement to further examine the proposal and identify possible areas of collaboration to improve solid waste management in Kano State.
