Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, today, paid a scheduled visit to the Lafia City Stadium to inspect the ongoing installation of turf on the playing pitch, in preparation for the commencement of the 2026/27 football league campaign in Nigeria.
Received on ground by the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and Coordinating Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, the Governor assessed the quality of materials, pace of work, and adherence to technical specifications, expressing satisfaction with the progress recorded so far.
He noted that the upgrade reflects his administration’s commitment to providing world-class sporting infrastructure that meets international standards, enhances the performance of athletes, and positions the State as a viable host for major football sporting events.
The Governor further directed the contractor to maintain momentum and ensure timely completion, stressing that the facility must be ready to welcome teams, fans and officials ahead of the new football season.
On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Alansmith Nigeria Limited, the contractor saddled with the installation task, Joshua Adamu, assured the Governor that the turf will be completely installed within the next ten days, and will be ready for use, especially by home teams, Nasarawa United FC, Nasarawa Amazons FC, and Basira FC.
The Governor also inspected the ongoing remodelling of the Sani Abacha Youth Centre, in Lafia, which is nearing completion.
Government officials, including Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Stephen Iliya Sasetu, Aides to the Governor, Chairmen of Nasarawa State Football Association, Salisu Usman Galadima, and Nasarawa United FC, Mr. Solomon Babanjah, and Directors as well as members of the Ministries of Youth and Sports Development and Works, Housing and Transport, joined the Commissioner, Kwanta Yakubu, to take the Governor on the guided tour of the facilities.
The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign will kickstart on Friday, 28th August, with Nasarawa United FC travelling to play Barau FC in Kano on Sunday, 30th August, 2026, before returning home to the Lafia City Stadium to host Rivers United FC on match-day two.
