The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai Branch, has declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike with immediate effect following the Niger State Government’s failure to implement key provisions of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.

The declaration was issued during an emergency congress and press conference held at the university campus in Lapai.

ASUU IBBUL Chairman, Comrade Galadima A. Bala, explained that the union was forced to take industrial action after repeated dialogue, appeals, and formal engagements failed to yield results, emphasizing that agreements reached with state government participation must be fully honoured.

The union pointed out that approximately 16 state universities across Nigeria including institutions in Bauchi, Gombe, Benue, Yobe, Osun, Ekiti, and Kano states, as well as Nasarawa State University—have already commenced or completed the implementation of the 2025 agreement.

ASUU warned that Niger State risks falling behind educationally, citing the massive exodus of academic talent seen in other institutions, such as Kaduna State University losing over 200 lecturers due to similar non-implementation issues.

The branch affirmed that while the strike is effective immediately, it remains open to genuine dialogue and will suspend the action once the state government demonstrates a concrete commitment to implementing the agreement.

Comrade Bala appealed to union members to remain disciplined and law-abiding throughout the strike while expressing regret over the disruption the industrial action will cause to students, parents, and university stakeholders.
