Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu, has assured that his administration will continue to strengthen the health care system and improve the welfare of health workers in the state.
The Governor disclosed this while commissioning the remodeled Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHUN), Sokoto State Council Secretariat.
Our correspondent reports that the commissioning ceremony was held at the Council Secretariat in Tamaje Area, along Western by-pass, Sokoto.
Governor Aliyu, represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruku Umar Abubakar, said the commissioning of the secretariat represents the state government’s collective commitment to strengthening the welfare, professional development, and working conditions of health workers.
He described health workers as indispensable partners in the delivery of quality healthcare to the people of the state.
According to him, as a government, they recognize that no healthcare system can function effectively without motivated, properly trained, and adequately supported personnel.
In his address, the National President of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Comrade Kabiru Ado Sani Minjibir, used the occasion to appeal to the state governor to take a further step by paying closer attention to some welfare needs of members of the union in the state.
Also speaking, former National President of the NLC/TUC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, specifically appreciated the efforts of the leadership of MAHWUN in the state for being proactive in transforming and improving the welfare of its members and challenged counterparts across the nation to emulate them.
Earlier, the State Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Comrade Nasiru Yahaya, noted that since assuming office, he has remained committed to fostering unity among members, irrespective of cadre, profession, or place of assignment.
Comrade Yahaya also appreciated the unwavering commitment of Governor Ahmad Aliyu to improving the health sector.
This, he said, has led to the strengthening of primary healthcare services through the renovation and construction of healthcare facilities, provision of medical equipment, improved access to healthcare services, and the recruitment and support of health personnel to improve the well-being of their members.
Other speakers included the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Jingle, and the representative of the National Vice President, Northwest Zone of MAHWUN, Comrade Ayuba Magaji.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of Awards of Excellence to some distinguished personalities.

Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Minister of Labour and Productivity Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruku Wurno, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Dadi Adare, among others.
