The Taraba State Government, through the Environmental and Sanitation Agency, on Saturday said it would arrest and prosecute livestock owners who allow their animals to roam freely within major towns in the state.
Chairman of the agency, Hon. Iliya Kefas, disclosed the state government’s decision while monitoring the monthly sanitation exercise in Jalingo.
Kefas lamented what he described as violations of sanitation and traffic regulations caused by stray animals and urged livestock owners to restrict their movement to avoid penalties.
According to the chairman, stray animals are creating environmental disorder and obstructing traffic, contributing to unhygienic conditions and other problems that could endanger the lives of residents.
He urged livestock owners to take necessary precautions, warning that the task force would take decisive action against anyone found violating environmental regulations.
“The arrest and prosecution of livestock owners who allow their animals to roam freely within the state metropolis will soon commence. We urge owners of these animals to take immediate action by restricting their movement to avoid being penalised,” Kefas warned.
The agency chairman thanked Governor Agbu Kefas for his recent commendation of the agency’s performance.
He assured residents that the state’s monthly sanitation exercise had come to stay, adding that the agency remained committed to ensuring a cleaner and more hygienic environment across Taraba.
Kefas explained that the sanitation exercise was not limited to sweeping and waste evacuation, noting that other critical components of the programme were also being enforced to achieve the desired objectives.
He urged residents to support the agency’s efforts to achieve Governor Agbu Kefas’ vision of a cleaner Taraba.
The chairman also called on residents to embrace a culture of cleanliness beyond designated sanitation hours, saying collective daily sanitation practices would promote a healthier environment.
“This deliberate exercise is to ensure that Governor Agbu Kefas’ desire for a cleaner Taraba is achieved. I wish to inform residents that the monthly sanitation exercise has come to stay, and they must avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
“Traders must keep their business areas clean, while property owners must also maintain drainage channels. The government will continue to provide equipment for waste evacuation and carry out public enlightenment across the 16 local government areas of the state,” the agency chairman stated.
