The Canada 2014 FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup most valuable player, Asisat Oshoala, says the target for Nigeria is to reclaim the Africa Women’s championship which is set to be held in Namibia in October.
Oshoala, top scorer at the last FIFA U20 women’s World Cup in Canada with seven goals, has joined up with the senior women’s national team, the Falcons as they prepare for the next Africa Women’s Championship.
The Falcons have opened camp in Abuja, the Nigerian capital after weeks of delay due to the crises in Nigerian football.
The team also failed to win the last edition of the competition for only the second time since inception, after they fell short in Equatorial Guinea.
But Oshoala says they are working very hard and hoping that the title returns to Nigeria.
“The target obviously is to go to Namibia and win the tournament, that is what we are working for at the moment,” she says.
“After the failure of 2012, we cannot afford not to win the competition again this time.”
The Nigerians are grouped alongside hosts Namibia, Ivory Coast, and Zambia in Group A, and play their opening game against the Ivoirians at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on October 11.
Nigeria has won the tournament a record eight times.
