FG to Partially Close First Niger Bridge for Maintenance Sept. 7–21

Date:

The Federal Ministry of Works has announced the partial closure of sections of the First Niger Bridge from September 7 to September 21, 2026, to allow for maintenance and repair works.

Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Mr Timothy Emenike, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Friday.

Emenike urged motorists and other road users who regularly use the bridge to take note of the planned closure and make alternative travel arrangements during the maintenance period.

He advised motorists and commuters travelling between Anambra and Delta states to use the Second Niger Bridge as an alternative route to reduce congestion and avoid delays.

According to him, the maintenance exercise will include repairs to vandalised sections of the First Niger Bridge and other necessary works aimed at keeping the critical infrastructure in good condition.

Emenike acknowledged that the temporary closure could cause inconvenience to motorists and commuters but assured the public that work would be carried out both day and night to ensure speedy completion.

He appealed to road users to cooperate with officials managing traffic around the bridge and strictly obey diversion signs and other traffic instructions throughout the maintenance period.

The First Niger Bridge remains a major transport link connecting Onitsha in Anambra State with Asaba in Delta State and serves thousands of motorists travelling between the South-East and other parts of the country.
