Thousands mourn late Gumel Emir as Shettima, Namadi attend funeral

Thousands of mourners, traditional rulers, political leaders and dignitaries gathered in Gumel, Jigawa State, on Friday, September 4, 2026, for the funeral prayer of the late Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmad Muhammad Sani II, who died aged 85.

The funeral prayer was held at the late monarch’s palace in Gumel Emirate following his death in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, after a period of illness.

The late emir, who was born in 1942, spent decades on the throne as a traditional ruler and custodian of the culture, history and values of the Gumel Emirate.

The funeral attracted the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who led a delegation from the Presidency.

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, also attended the funeral.

The governors of Kano and other northern states were among dignitaries who gathered to pay their final respects to the deceased monarch.

Emirs from Kano, Jigawa and other traditional rulers across the country also attended the funeral.

The ancient town of Gumel was filled with mourners as residents and visitors converged on the emirate to bid farewell to the late monarch.

Shettima prayed for Allah to forgive the deceased and grant him eternal rest.

He also prayed that Allah reward his good deeds and grant the family, people of Gumel Emirate and the government and people of Jigawa State the strength to bear the loss.

The late Emir was survived by approximately 33 children, comprising 21 males and 12 females, as well as numerous grandchildren.
