Boeing: Africa’s commercial aircraft fleet to double by 2045

Boeing, the US aircraft manufacturer, says Africa’s commercial aircraft fleet would more than double from 755 to 1,625 aircraft by 2045.

In its 2026 commercial market outlook (CMO) for Africa, Boeing said the continent is expected to receive a total of 1,165 new aircraft by 2045 as passenger traffic on the continent grows by almost 6 percent annually.

The aircraft manufacturer said Africa’s young and increasingly urban population, growing middle class, and improving infrastructure would drive one of the fastest rates of passenger traffic growth globally over the next 20 years.

“Of the nearly 1,200 newly delivered airplanes expected by 2045, 870 will be single‑aisle jets to support expanding domestic and regional networks,” the report said.

“Demand for widebody airplanes will more than double, supporting fleet modernization and long‑haul network growth.”

Boeing also said Africa’s cargo fleet will grow from 60 to 150 freighters as logistics, e-commerce, and high-value export markets develop.

The company said intra-African passenger traffic is expected to grow faster than the regional average, supported by improved flight connections.

“Europe remains the largest international passenger market for flights to and from Africa and is forecast to remain so through 2045,” Boeing said.

“This is driven by expanding economic ties, enduring cultural and family connections, and rising tourism investment.”

The aircraft manufacturer said the expansion of Africa’s aviation ecosystem would create growing demand for aviation services and skilled personnel.

Boeing forecasts a $140 billion market for maintenance, repair, overhaul and modifications (MRO), as well as digital solutions.

According to the report, Africa will require an additional 75,000 aviation professionals, comprising 22,000 pilots, 25,000 technicians, and 28,000 cabin crew.

In August 2024, the federal government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Boeing to facilitate the acquisition of modern aircraft.

Under the MoU, Boeing’s airport engineering team will provide consultation services to help open and expand airport capabilities.

The team will also offer advisory services on the development of MROs.

To further address challenges faced by domestic airlines in accessing aircraft, the federal government approved the establishment of the Nigeria aircraft leasing company.
