Two police officers have reportedly been killed after gunmen ambushed the convoy of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The DPO reportedly escaped the attack, which occurred while he was returning to Ayilamo after an official engagement at the Benue State Police Command headquarters in Makurdi.
Community sources alleged that the attackers were armed herders operating in the area. However, the identity and motive of the assailants had yet to be independently established by security authorities.
A source, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said the attack occurred at about 6 p.m. as police personnel escorted the DPO back to Ayilamo.
The source expressed concern over what residents described as a resurgence of deadly attacks in the area, resulting in the loss of lives and heightened fear among communities.
The latest incident comes days after another deadly attack in the axis in which several police officers and residents were reportedly killed.
Confirming the latest attack, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Aondongu Peter, said two officers attached to the DPO’s escort team were killed.
“The DPO came for an official engagement at the state headquarters. While returning to Ayilamo, two officers in his entourage were killed,” Peter said.
The police spokesperson did not immediately provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the attack or whether arrests had been made.
The incident has renewed concerns over security in Logo and other parts of Benue State affected by recurring attacks.
