Nollywood Stars, Fans Mourn Veteran Actor Olu Jacobs at 84

Tributes have continued to pour in from Nollywood stars, entertainers, political figures and fans following the death of veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, at the age of 84.

Jacobs died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his death on Instagram on behalf of the family.

The family described the celebrated actor as the “Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to bloggers, social media influencers and members of the public to respect its privacy during the period of mourning.

Following the announcement, colleagues and admirers took to social media to celebrate Jacobs’ life, describing him as a legend, mentor and towering figure whose work helped shape Nigeria’s theatre and film industry.

Actress Kate Henshaw described Jacobs as “a great one” who shared his talent with the world. She also prayed for comfort for his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and the entire family.

Funke Akindele remembered Jacobs as a true legend and a gracious man who supported and encouraged younger talents, saying his contribution to the entertainment industry would not be forgotten.

Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, also paid tribute to Jacobs, whom he fondly called “Uncle Jay.” He described him as an icon, pioneer and giant of Nigerian theatre and film whose talent and discipline helped create opportunities for younger practitioners.

Saidi Balogun described Jacobs as a “great legend,” while Yemi Solade hailed his enduring contribution to the creative industry.

Mercy Johnson-Okojie recalled the impact of Jacobs’ guidance and professional corrections on her career, while Eniola Afolabi described him as an icon who inspired generations of actors.

Kemi Ajumbobi praised Jacobs’ commanding screen presence and acting expertise. She also commended Joke Silva for standing by her husband through the years and prayed for strength for the family.

Popular content creator Mr Macaroni described Jacobs as a legend, icon and inspiration, saying watching the veteran actor deepened his love for acting.

Rapper Ice Prince Zamani described him as “iconic,” while musician Paul Play Dairo hailed Jacobs as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Dairo recalled being inspired by Jacobs’ performance in The Dogs of War and praised him for breaking barriers and representing Nigeria internationally.

Fans also flooded the family’s social media pages with condolence messages, celebrating Jacobs’ distinctive voice, performances and influence on generations of Nigerian actors.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo were also among public figures who paid tribute to the late actor.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs built a career spanning several decades across theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and worked in British theatre and television as well as international film productions before becoming one of Nollywood’s most prominent figures.

Jacobs won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and received several other honours for his contribution to the performing arts. In 2011, he was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Alongside his wife, Joke Silva, Jacobs was involved in the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, contributing to the development and training of a new generation of Nigerian performers.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and other family members.
