Super Eagles talisman Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of Nigeria’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after failing to recover in time from a persistent muscle strain.
The prolific striker was a major omission from Galatasaray’s matchday squad for their highly anticipated Süper Lig clash against Trabzonspor, cementing fears that his rehabilitation is progressing much slower than initially anticipated.
Osimhen had been included in Nigeria’s latest squad list by Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle. The decision to name the reigning African Footballer of the Year was a calculated gamble, born out of mutual optimism between the technical staff at Galatasaray and the Nigerian national team setup. Both parties were hopeful that the forward would feature in the domestic match against Trabzonspor to prove his match fitness before flying out for international duty.
However, his complete absence from the stadium tonight has triggered the contingency plans. Galatasaray’s medical team had previously sent official correspondence to Coach Chelle warning of the tight timeline, and his lack of fitness has now forced Nigeria to adapt without their star number nine.

The loss of Osimhen represents a significant tactical headache for Eric Chelle as Nigeria prepares for a crucial set of qualifying fixtures. While the Super Eagles boast an incredibly deep attacking pool—including the likes of Victor Boniface, Ademola Lookman, and Taiwo Awoniyi—Osimhen’s physical presence, leadership, and lethal goal-scoring record are nearly impossible to replicate.
Galatasaray will use the upcoming international window to put the striker through an intensive, isolated recovery program. Their goal is to ensure he is at 100% capacity before throwing him back into the grueling domestic and European calendar. Meanwhile, the Nigerian coaching staff is expected to announce a replacement from the standby list in the coming days.
