Vice President Kashim Shettima will today deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading Nigeria’s delegation, Vice President Shettima will address the assembly on Thursday, September 24.
The Vice President’s media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, confirmed in a statement Wednesday that his address will outline the administration’s position on key global issues, including the reform of international institutions, sustainable development, peace and security, climate action, and the creation of a more equitable global economic order.
It added that the Vice President joined other Heads of State and Government at the UN Headquarters for the opening of the General Debate, which runs from September 22 to 28 under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Ahead of the proceedings, Shettima attended a welcome breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The Nigerian delegation includes Governors Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), alongside Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), Minister of Foreign Affairs Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim.
Prior to his scheduled address today, Vice President Shettima represented Nigeria at the 3rd High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG).
There, he advocated for a unified continental effort to end Africa’s reliance on raw mineral exports, urging African nations to invest in local processing and value-addition industries to drive job creation and industrial growth.
