From Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Youth Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Abubakar Attajiri, and another party chieftain, Alhaji Aminu Muhammad Gidan-Kanawa, on Saturday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking shortly after joining the APC, Attajiri and Gidan-Kanawa said their decision was influenced by what they described as the developmental strides of Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, as well as the leadership of former governor and APC leader in the state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
The two politicians also expressed confidence in the leadership of the APC in Sokoto State, saying the party was being positioned for greater progress.
“We are hereby pledging to work tirelessly to ensure the success of all APC candidates at all levels during the forthcoming elections,” they said.
They also pledged to support the policies and programmes of Governor Aliyu, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC candidates ahead of the elections.
Receiving the defectors, Sokoto State APC Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Sarkin-Gobir Adiya, welcomed them into the party and assured them of equal treatment with existing members.
Adiya, who emerged as chairman of the Sokoto State APC during the party’s state congress in March 2026, said the party remained united and committed to strengthening its structures across the state.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of President Tinubu, Governor Aliyu and Senator Wamakko, while reiterating the party’s determination to mobilise support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“By the special grace of God, APC candidates will emerge victorious at all levels during the forthcoming general elections,” Adiya said.
