2027: Tinubu Must Go Movement Calls for Protection of Freedom of Expression

A civic group campaigning for Nigerians to vote out President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, has called for the protection of the rights of Nigerians to freedom of expression and lawful civic participation in the ongoing campaigns ahead of the election.

The group, Tinubu Must Go Movement, said in a statement on Saturday that it viewed with concerns, the alleged harassment, intimidation, arbitrary detention, and other actions against persons expressing dissenting political views, particularly members and supporters of the movement.

It also noted the severe economic hardship being experienced by many Nigerian families and the broader impact of the prevailing economic conditions on citizens across the country, irrespective of their political affiliation or viewpoint.

The statement reads: “We reaffirm that every Nigerian is entitled to the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and applicable laws, including the right to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and participation in the political process, subject always to lawful limitations prescribed by law.

“Accordingly, we respectfully call upon all relevant security and law-enforcement agencies to discharge their constitutional and statutory responsibilities impartially and to ensure that no person is subjected to arrest, detention, intimidation, harassment, or other restrictions merely for expressing a lawful political opinion or participating peacefully in civic activities.

“Where any arrest or detention is considered necessary, we urge strict compliance with due process and all applicable legal safeguards.”

The Tinubu Must Go Movement also urged the Federal Government and all relevant authorities to take every lawful and necessary measure to secure the safe rescue and return of all children and other persons currently held in captivity, and to give this matter the highest priority.

“Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians. Our political differences should be addressed through constitutional, peaceful, and lawful means, with respect for human dignity, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of every citizen,” it added.

The group acknowledged the commitment of the arrow heads of the movement, Hamza Nuhu Dantani and Abba Hikima, as well as other Nigerians and commended their continued participation in civic discourse through lawful means.

“This statement is made in furtherance of our commitment to constitutional democracy, peaceful civic engagement, accountability, and the protection of the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation,” the group stated.
