Nigeria’s Maritime Technology Challenge Takes Centre Stage as Engineer Wins Africa Award

Date:

Nigeria’s quest to build a stronger indigenous maritime industry has come into focus following the recognition of marine engineering expert, Engr. Dr. Eferebo Ibietela Sylvanus, at the 15th Democracy Heroes Award Africa.
The award comes against the backdrop of growing calls for Nigeria to move beyond its maritime resource potential and develop the technical capacity needed to compete in shipbuilding, offshore engineering and other high-value maritime activities.
For an economy seeking to expand its blue economy, the issue goes beyond access to waterways and maritime trade. It also involves the ability to design, build, maintain and service marine vessels and infrastructure using locally developed expertise.
Sylvanus, the National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA), has made indigenous technological development a key part of his advocacy for the sector.
In April 2026, he called for greater technical independence, urging Nigeria to build its own capacity for maritime innovation rather than remain heavily dependent on foreign expertise.
He has also pursued initiatives aimed at strengthening research and professional collaboration through NIMENA.
In August, the institution unveiled a shipbuilding trend report examining the potential applications of artificial intelligence, digital twins, robotics and blockchain-enabled supply chains in the maritime industry.
The technologies offer opportunities to improve ship design, construction processes, maintenance and supply-chain efficiency. But their adoption in Nigeria will require investment, specialised training, research funding and policies that support local engineering businesses.
Sylvanus brings more than two decades of experience in engineering consultancy and technical leadership to the sector. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Somatrix Marine Limited, which provides services in marine consulting, ship design, marine surveys, construction management and research and development.
His academic qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, a master’s degree in Naval Architecture and Ship Construction, and a doctorate in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from Rivers State University, Port Harcourt.
He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and a registered engineer with COREN.
His professional work also covers maritime engineering standards and local content development, areas relevant to Nigeria’s efforts to expand domestic participation in maritime and offshore projects.
Yet the industry’s broader challenge remains how to convert expertise and research into tangible results, including stronger local shipbuilding capacity, safer maritime operations, industrial investment and employment opportunities for Nigerian professionals.
The recognition at the Democracy Heroes Award Africa draws attention to the role of marine engineering in that process.
Ultimately, Nigeria’s blue economy ambitions will depend not simply on recognising technical expertise, but on creating the conditions for local engineers, researchers and businesses to develop solutions, attract investment and compete effectively in the maritime industry.
