Super Falcons midfielder Jennifer Echegini has declared that she wants to achieve even greater success with Nigeria.
She insisted that winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and featuring at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Olympic Games have only strengthened her ambition.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder said representing Nigeria comes with significant responsibility because of the national team’s rich history, passionate supporters and the pride associated with wearing the country’s colours.
Echegini acknowledged that playing for the Super Falcons carries a different level of responsibility compared with representing a club, given the expectations of millions of Nigerians who follow the team.
“The Super Falcons have a lot of fans, a lot of pride, a lot of history with their country, so there’s a lot of weight to carry,” she said.
“I feel like there’s more responsibility than playing for a club would have.”
The midfielder described representing Nigeria as an honour and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be among the players selected to wear the national team’s jersey.
“Being able to be one out of hundreds of millions that we have as Nigerians, it’s an honour. It’s something I will forever be grateful for,” she stated.
Despite already achieving significant milestones in her international career, Echegini maintained that she remains determined to accomplish more with the Super Falcons.
“I’ve pretty much been to the Olympics, the World Cup, I’ve won a WAFCON, but I want everything more. Times ten everything,” she declared.
“I know I can give more.”
Echegini explained that her ambition is not primarily driven by the pursuit of individual recognition or financial rewards.
Instead, she wants to maximize her abilities and look back on her career with a sense of fulfilment.
“I don’t strive to be necessarily the best in the world, to be the highest paid, but I want to look back five, ten years from now and feel fulfilled with the career that I had,” she explained.
The Nigerian international also highlighted the short duration of a professional football career, stressing the importance of making the most of every opportunity while she remains active.
“Football career is very short,” she said.
“Just making sure that I take advantage of the time that I’ve been given.”
