Flamingos beat Puerto Rico, face DPR Korea test

Date:

Nigeria’s Flamingos revived their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a 2–0 victory over Puerto Rico in Rabat, Morocco, on Tuesday.

The Nigerian girls secured all three points through goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and substitute Precious Oscar, setting up a crucial Group B clash against defending champions DPR Korea on Friday.

The victory came at a vital stage of the competition after Nigeria began their campaign under pressure to strengthen their chances of progressing to the next round.

The Flamingos started brightly, pressing high and using their pace to trouble Puerto Rico’s defence.

Their dominance paid off in the 25th minute when Adegbuyi converted an assist from Queen Joseph to give Nigeria the lead.

The goal boosted the confidence of the Nigerian side, who controlled much of the first half and pushed for a second goal.

Nigeria continued to create chances after the break, with Joseph, Tosin Rafiu and Favour Nkwocha coming close to extending the advantage.

Puerto Rico attempted to fight back through tactical changes, but the Flamingos’ defence remained resolute.

Coach Hakeem Busari introduced Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku in the 67th minute to inject fresh energy into the attack.

The changes helped Nigeria sustain their pressure, but the decisive second goal did not arrive until the 90th minute.

Substitute Oscar rose highest to head home a cross from Kemi Adegbuyi, sealing the 2–0 victory and ensuring Nigeria collected maximum points.

The Flamingos managed the closing stages, including six minutes of added time, to secure a much-needed win.

However, Nigeria’s qualification hopes face a major test against DPR Korea, who thrashed Poland 6–1 in the other Group B fixture.

Friday’s encounter is expected to play a significant role in determining the group standings, with the Nigerian side needing another disciplined performance to strengthen their chances of advancing.

The Flamingos, bronze medallists at the 2022 edition, will now look to build on their victory over Puerto Rico as they prepare to face the defending champions.
