Tinubu govt boosts Katsina power supply with 120MVA substation

Date:

The Federal Government has commissioned a 120MVA transmission substation in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State to strengthen electricity transmission and improve power supply to homes, businesses and industries.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, inaugurated the 132/33kV facility, which is expected to reinforce the state’s transmission network and support economic activities.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed.

Speaking at the commissioning, Tegbe said the project was part of the Federal Government’s strategic efforts to strengthen the national grid and expand electricity transmission capacity across the country.

He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to delivering critical power infrastructure to ensure electricity was transmitted efficiently to consumers.

Radda described the substation as a landmark investment in Katsina’s power infrastructure, saying it would improve the capacity of the state’s transmission network.

The facility comprises two 60MVA transformers, giving it a combined capacity of 120MVA.

According to the governor, the additional capacity would enable more electricity to reach households, businesses and industries, while supporting the state’s economic development.

He said reliable electricity was essential for industrial growth, improved public services and the expansion of productive activities across the state.

Radda added that the project would complement Katsina’s expanding renewable energy programme and support key sectors, including agriculture, agro-processing, commerce, education and healthcare.

He thanked Tinubu for approving the project and commended the Minister of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria for their commitment to its completion.

The governor also called on residents of the host communities to protect the facility against vandalism.

He described the substation as a public asset whose protection was essential to ensuring its benefits were sustained for future generations.

The commissioning was attended by members of the Katsina State Executive Council, officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Kano Electricity Distribution Company.

The commissioning marks another addition to Katsina’s electricity infrastructure, although the extent to which the facility will improve supply to consumers will depend on transmission performance, available generation and distribution capacity.
