Julián Álvarez has issued a direct and public apology to Atlético Madrid supporters following a turbulent summer transfer saga that strained his relationship with the club’s fanbase.

Speaking in an interview with Movistar, the Argentine forward addressed controversial comments he made during the World Cup break, admitting that both his choice of words and the timing of his statements were a significant error in judgment.

“I wanted to apologize to our fans for my words during World Cup. They were a mistake. Both the way I said them and the timing, it was a mistake from me — I am sorry,” Álvarez told Movistar.

The comments had sparked widespread frustration among Atlético supporters, who felt undermined during a critical period of the season. Acknowledging the backlash, Álvarez expressed understanding for the fans’ negative reaction, noting that he would have felt the same way in their position.

“Especially because I understand why the fans were angry. I would have been angry too if I were a fan,” he added. “Even more so considering how much they’ve supported me. They’ve been very generous — and I really appreciated that.”

Despite the off-field tension, Álvarez was quick to praise the unwavering backing he received from inside the club dressing room. He expressed gratitude toward his teammates and the coaching staff for standing by him through the difficult period as he works to regain peak physical and mental form.

“I also want to thank the team because they’ve supported me throughout this time. I’m gradually feeling better. I’m grateful to all my teammates because they’ve supported me,” Álvarez said.

The forward also reflected on his recent performances on the pitch, signaling an upward trajectory as he reintegrates fully into Diego Simeone’s tactical plans.

“I’m working to improve. I’ve been feeling better in the last few matches, both physically and on the ball as I want to help the team and give my best,” he explained. “When you’re feeling good in life, it shows on the pitch. Even though we’re professionals, everything has an influence. I feel good and ready to compete for everything with Atlético.”

With the air cleared and his focus firmly back on club football, Álvarez concluded with a promise to win back the complete trust of the Wanda Metropolitano faithful through dedication and hard work on the pitch.
