Niger govt introduces new scholarship policy

Niger state Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Alhaji Bashar Nuhu, has said that a new policy for the award of scholarship to students in institutions of higher learning has been introduced.

A statement issued at the weekend by Nuhu, stated that according to the new policy, the scholarship will now be given to students in public institutions which marked departure from the previous practice where all categories of students enjoyed government scholarship.

The policy provided for various types of scholarships and covers all courses such as NCE, Diploma, pre-degree HND, 1st degree, Masters Degree Phd and Post Degree professional programmes.

According to Nuhu, the state government has also introduced special merit award for students who made 7A(s) and maintain a high grades during their university education, which he said will help to ensure students pay more attention to their studies.

The Commissioner said before the policy was put in place, a stakeholders’ forum which included academics retired professionals, Unions and representatives of Parents Teachers Association was held in Minna, who gave the scheme their approval.

He disclosed that another policy which aims at driving the tertiary education sector and guiding the establishment of private tertiary institutions in the state have been approved by the state executive council.

The two policies according to him, aimed at giving tertiary education sector focus and direction in line with the national policy on education and the needs of the state as well as harmonize divergent views towards producing enduring and result oriented education sector.
