Nigeria’s Flamingos have reached their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.
The Nigerian girls produced an impressive performance to overcome the South Americans at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
The victory means Nigeria will face Japan in the final of the competition.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring for the Flamingos in the 56th minute to give Nigeria a deserved 1-0 lead.
Awawu Bashiru doubled the advantage in the 71st minute, putting Nigeria firmly in control of the encounter.
The Flamingos continued their attacking display and extended their lead to 3-0 in the 86th minute.
Brazil, however, scored a consolation goal in the 89th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
But the late strike was not enough to prevent Nigeria from securing a historic victory and booking their place in the final.
The Flamingos will now battle Japan for the title after the Asian side defeated North Korea 4-1 on penalties.
Japan and North Korea had played out a 1-1 draw in regulation time before the former secured qualification through the shootout.
Nigeria’s victory over Brazil represents a major milestone for the country’s youth women’s football team, which will now have an opportunity to win its first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
