British woman, unborn baby die in Nigeria

Date:

A 40-year-old British woman, Claire Chadwick, and her unborn baby have died in Nigeria after she developed sepsis towards the end of her pregnancy, with her family appealing for £10,000 to repatriate their remains to the United Kingdom.

Chadwick was 37 weeks pregnant and expecting a baby girl with her husband, Ibrahim, when the tragedy occurred.

According to the Daily Mail on Thursday, the unborn child died in the womb before Chadwick developed sepsis, which later progressed to septic shock and claimed her life.

Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to an infection that can cause the body’s immune system to damage its own tissues and organs. In severe cases, it can lead to organ failure and death.

The British woman reportedly relocated from the UK to Nigeria to begin a new life with her husband.

The couple regularly shared videos about their relationship, faith and food challenges on TikTok and Instagram.

Following their deaths, Chadwick’s sister, Shannon, launched a GoFundMe appeal titled *Bringing Claire Home*, seeking £10,000 to cover the cost of returning her sister and the unborn baby to Britain for burial.

In the appeal, Shannon said the family had been overwhelmed by the unexpected logistical and legal requirements involved in repatriating their remains.

She said the family’s greatest wish was to bring both mother and child home for a dignified burial.

“More than anything, we want them both returned so they can be laid to rest with dignity, surrounded by the family who love them,” she said.

Speaking to WalesOnline, Shannon said Chadwick was survived by her 19-year-old son, who lives in Wales, her husband and other relatives.

Describing her late sister, she said she was “a woman who lived her life in her own way” and would leave a lasting impression on those who knew her.

Shannon also expressed gratitude to REST, a charity that supports families dealing with sudden or tragic deaths abroad, for its assistance.

Tributes have continued to pour in on the fundraising page, with friends and acquaintances remembering Chadwick as kind, caring and someone who brought laughter to those around her.
