Coaches on the firing line as clubs battle for survival

Date:

Coaches of Nigeria league clubs are again walking the tight rope as the competition reaches its business end. The coaches are again literally sitting on hot seats and even when they are not to blame, they are usually the sacrificial lambs as clubs fight for survival.

This season already Zakary Baraje (Enyimba), Henry Abiodun (Sunshine Stars), Maurice Cooreman (Gombe United), Hassan Abubakar (Kaduna United) and Abdullahi Biffo (Giwa FC) have been shown the door. The latest coaching casualties are Lawrence Akpokona and Ndubuisi Nduka of FC Taraba, who were given the big boot for their teams’ poor run.

Akpokona took charge of the team at the beginning of the season, but the Ogbomosho is now languishing in relegation zone, 18th on the 20-team league table with 34 points in 29 games.

Akpokona has once tutored Insurance FC of Benin, Rangers and was a Super Eagles assistant coach and U17 national team head coach.
