Fire razed the Guest House of the Emir of Dass, Alhaji Usman Bilyaminu Othman, at the Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Bauchi, with one person burnt to death in the early hours of yesterday.
A statement made available to journalists in Bauchi by the state Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Haruna Mohammed, said the deceased, a 40 year-old man, Murtala Mohammed Othman, was trapped in the building and got burnt to death in the process.
According to the statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the fire incident, which engulfed the whole building, occurred at about 3am, adding that while the deceased was trapped, his wife, Zuwaira, and two children sustained varying degree of injuries in the incident.
Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), further informed that police patrol teams led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of GRA division of the state command visited the scene of the accident, adding that both Bauchi State Fire Service and The Federal Polytechnic Fire Services were contacted to put off the fire.
He stated that the victims were rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, for medical attention, adding that the entire area had been cordoned-off, to secure the property from looters, who might cash-in on the opportunity to steal.
The PPRO added that investigation into the incident was in progress to ascertain the cause of the inferno.
