Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Zamfara state Command, Mr. Amos Yakubu Thliza yesterday disclosed that no fewer than 3,000 people die worldwide on daily basis as a result of road accidents, caused by negligence of commercial drivers.

Thliza, who made the declaration during the flag-off ceremony of the 2014 ember months, titled: ‘Road Safety is a shared Responsibility, it depends on you’, held at the Central Motor Park, Gusau, the state

capital, said a report posted by the UN has revealed at least 1.3 million

people were being killed as a result of road traffic crashes across the world, which gives the average of 3,000 of victims. He further announced that, “The UN warns that unless immediate and effective actions are taken road traffic injuries are predicted to become the fifth leading causes of death in the world, resulting in an estimated 2.4 million deaths each year which could be increasing progressively”.

He however said, the donations of motorcycles, Golf cars and buses made by the state government has increased the level of challenges facing the Command, adding that, there is need for the provision of two more patrol vehicles to adequately manage the operations along the four patrol routes in the state as the only two operational vehicles of the FRSC cannot serve the purpose.

Responding, a representative of the state governor, Alhaji Haruna Sallau, has assured perfect cooperation for the FRSC in the state, adding that the state government would do everything possible to ensure the command is empowered towards achieving the desired goals.

Sallau has also warned the drivers, especially those flying Gusau-Sokoto to always consider the rules of driving and the roads policy propagated by the FRSC in its efforts to ensure the minimisation of road traffic crashes that lead to the loss of lives.
