Jonathan swears-in new CJNBy Lawrence Olaoye

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday officially swore-in Justice Mahmud Mohammed as the new Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN).

This is coming as the President charged the judiciary to be forthright in the delivery of justice to the populace in order to avoid a situation where the people would resort to self help whenever issues of ligation arise.

Jonathan said “Honourable Justice Mahmud Mohammed is assuming office at a time when the nation, including the Judiciary, is implementing institutional reforms in order to improve on governance and service delivery.

The President urged the judiciary not to disappoint in dispensation of justice particularly now that politics is around the corner.

He said “The role of the judiciary in resolving political disputes in the country has been commendable. This has, over the years, engendered public confidence thereby discouraging resort to self-help with all its attendant negative consequences. I therefore urge our new Chief Justice to continue to steer the judiciary on the path of forthrightness required to entrench democratic consolidation.

Responding Mohammed thanked the President, the National judicial Council and the Senate for their role in his appointment, confirmation and swearing in.

He promised to build on the foundation laid by his immediate predecessor, particularly the ongoing review of the rules and guidelines for the institution of disciplinary actions against erring judicial officers.
