Jega crisis: Gov’t setup 6 man commission of inquiry

Following a recent clash between the Police and Jega community which led to the death of five people in Jega town of Kebbi State, the State government has constituted a six-man commission of inquiry to look into the immediate and remote causes of the crisis with the aim of fishing out the perpetrators.

Inaugurating the six man committee on behalf of the state government yesterday at the state high court, Birnin Kebbi, the Chief Justice of the state (CJ) Justice Bala Mairiga said that based on the powers conferred upon him by section 2 (1) of the commissions of inquiry Law Cap. 33 of the laws of kebbi state 1993 edition and all other powers enabled them to inaugurate the commission.

He said that one of the reference of the commission is to fish out the immediate and remote causes of the civil disturbances that took place in Jega on the 29th and 30th of November 2014, and also the role of any individual, group of individuals or any person or group of persons in causing the disturbance or destruction or damage of any private or public property.

The CJ further pointed out that the commission would also look at the extent of damage or destruction of public or private property and estimate of the value of such public or private property as well as make recommendations for provision of relief assistance to victims of violence or compensation for loss of private or public property.

 He said that the committee would also look at that acts of omission or commission which are criminal in nature and recommend appropriate punishment or sanctions against the perpetrators, while recommendations and remedial actions are to be put in place by the state government, Jega local government council and other law enforcement agencies to avoid the recurrence of similar act in Jega or in any part of the state.

Justice Mairiga said that the commission of inquiry shall carry out its duties within a period of two weeks and summit their report to the Kebbi state government for further action.
