The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved the sum of N1, 234,583,457.37 for the construction of sewage for Guzape District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The project, according to the FCT minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, who briefed newsmen after the FEC meeting, is expected to be completed within 16 months of its award.
Mohammed said “After the consideration of the conclusions of the last FEC, the Minister of FCT presented a memo seeking council’s approval for the award of contract for the construction of sewage facilities to connect Guzape District (Lots 1 and 2) to the trunk mains (Stage I -connection of Guzape Lot 1) in the FCT.
“Guzape District is located around the fringes of the FCT and was not initially considered to be part of the Abuja City Master Plan. However, in order to avoid abuses and uncoordinated development around the fringes of the city, the administration embarked on the land use and detailed site development plan of the city fringes to integrate them into overall city planning scheme.
“Consequently, Guzape District Lots 1 and 2 were planned and provided with facilities such as roads, water supply, storm water, drainage system and internal sewage network including mini sewage treat plants.
“The scope of the work, its significance and substantial compliance of the award process with the provisions of due process were noted and extensively deliberated by members.
“In addition, the council noted specifically that the project will provide employment opportunities for about 50 indigenous professionals, artisans, skilled and unskilled labour and that there is already the provision of N300 million from the FCT internally generated revenue for the commencement of the project while adequate provisions have been provided in the FCT Funding Plan for the project.
Accordingly, council approved the award of the contract for the construction of sewage facilities to connect Guzape District (Lots 1 and 2) to the trunk mains (stage 1- connection of Guzape Lot 1) in the FCT in favour of Messrs Golden Construction Nigeria Limited.”
