Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilots and crew members who were held for nine days, following successful diplomatic talks between both countries.

The release followed a high-level visit by a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who met with Burkinabè authorities in Ouagadougou, including President Ibrahim Traoré. The delegation also included senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and NAF Headquarters.

A senior security source said the engagement focused on peaceful dialogue, de-escalation of tensions, and the safe release of the detained personnel. Nigeria also used the talks to reaffirm its commitment to regional cooperation and adherence to international aviation and military protocols.

According to the source, Nigeria opted for diplomacy and good neighbourly relations, stressing the importance of mutual understanding and trust in addressing shared security challenges in the Sahel region.

The delegation further emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to regional security collaboration and respect for international standards, recalling the long-standing partnership between Nigeria and Burkina Faso in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

Both sides expressed optimism that the resolution of the incident will strengthen bilateral ties and enhance joint efforts to promote peace and stability across West Africa.
