Chairman House of Representatives committee on health, Rep Ndudi Elumelu, (PDP Delta) has asked the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to apologise to millions of Nigerians, for the lives that were lost during the strike.
Rep Elumelu stated this yesterday, while addressing reporters in Abuja, noting that though the NMA has suspended the strike, it has failed to do one thing: the NMA failed to apologise to Nigerians.
“The NMA should apologise to Nigerians for all the inconveniences and lives that were lost during the strike.
“The law is pactasunt servanda, meaning: agreements must be obeyed. If parties had obeyed previous agreements executed between NMA and representatives of Federal Government, the strike would have been averted. The lesson to learn here is that we must at all times, obey contents of agreements freely entered into in order to avert crisis,” Elumelu said.
“The leadership of NMA has been described as unpatriotic even by other Nigerian doctors, as well as members of the public in view of various health challenges confronting the nation and the scourge of Ebola virus disease, which erupted during the strike period. Patriotic Nigerians, both home and abroad have passionately condemned the action of the current leadership of the NMA (led by Dr. Kayode Obembe).
Elumelu also reminded government and the NMA of the resolutions reached by the committee during its 3rd Stakeholders Meeting on the just suspended strike.
The NMA, had on Sunday, August 25, called-off a nationwide strike it embarked on July 1.
