As the world commemorates the Press Freedom Day, Kano State Governor-elect, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged all categories of leaders to play their part in ensuring a free press by protecting the rights of media practitioners around the globe.
The Governor-elect made the appeal in a special message, as contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.
He also urged media owners and journalists to be steadfast on providing credible news while remaining staunch defenders of free speech in the society.
The governor-elect said only with credible reportage, the media can preserve its respectability as the watchdog of the society to be able to hold political office holders accountable.
“While congratulating the members of the 4th Estate of leadership on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day 2023, Engr. Abba Kabir said the incoming State Government will collaborate with the media to promote accountability and good governance through objective, fair and balanced reporting.
“The Governor-elect assured media practitioners of a Kano society, under his watch, where press freedom is guaranteed especially if decency and ethics guiding the noble profession are not compromised,” the statement reads in parts.
