Mr Muyiwa Odele, an official of UNDP, has urged the Federal Government to mainstream the framework on the implementation of the Rio+20 Summit in different sectors of the economy.
Odele gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, stressing that mainstreaming the framework would enhance sustainability.
He said the UNDP had worked with the Federal Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders in 2013 to develop a framework for the implementation of the decisions of Rio+20 Summit.
He also said the ministries had a draft document for the implementation of outcome of Rio+ 20, noting that most of the decisions in the document were sector-based which should be mainstreamed.
Odele said the UNDP had been holding consultations with the ministries, states, civil society organsations and academia on the implementation of the framework.
He also commended the Federal Government for participation in the summit, saying that Nigeria’s participation had yielded some positive results.
“The feedback we got from people who interact with the Federal Government shows clearly that there is a lot of commitment to promoting sustainable development in Nigeria,’’ he said.
NAN recalls that key issues discussed at the Rio+ 20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2012 were alternative energy, systematic patterns of production and public transportation systems to reduce emission, among others.
The summit focused on a green economy in the context of sustainable poverty eradication and the institutional framework for sustainable development. (NAN)
