Resident doctors across hospitals in Zamfara state have turned down the directive issued by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to its members across the nation to resume duty, while they await reinstatement letters from the federal government, the NMA state chairman, Aminu Muhammad Sakajiki has said.
Sakajiki, who disclosed that the sacked resident doctors across the state offered about 85% of the medical services rendered in the hospitals, lamented that their total absent has virtually wasted the NMA directive for the call-off of the strike, as only skeletal services could be rendered to patients.
His words, “There could not be adequate delivery of hospitals services to the people, a huge gap has been created in medical services as the affected resident doctors are the most needed segment to achieve the desired goals”
He further disclosed that, “It seems the strike is still on as there has not been any difference since the medical doctors remained at home waiting for reinstatement, the situation has the tendency of discouraging patients from visiting hospitals”.
The chairman stated that only three doctors are currently available to attend to patients, lamenting that their services could not serve the needs of the health sector, which is required across the 14 local government areas of the state.
