Seals weight scale at ShopRite

To enforce compliance with established standards for pricing, weights, and measurements, the Federal Government has unveiled a nationwide inspection and monitoring programme targeting businesses across the 36 states
This initiative commenced with unannounced audits of public and private business premises in Abuja.
Speaking during the enforcement exercise, Amb. Nura Abba Rimi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, said it marks the beginning of a critical nationwide initiative, stating that the program aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” aimed at enhancing economic stability by fostering market confidence and ensuring consumer protection through fair transactions.
He explained that the goal is to ensure that consumers receive the correct quantity and quality of goods for their money, thereby preventing fraud and exploitation.
“Our monitoring of instruments is essential for establishing a fair and transparent market and assessing compliance with national laws.
“Businesses failing to meet the standards outlined in the Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2016 or the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 will not be permitted to operate”, Rimi said.
It was gathered that the inspection team comprises various government agencies collaborating under an Inter-Agency Cooperation framework, including the Department of Weights and Measures of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment. This annual exercise aims to protect consumers from unethical corporate practices.
Also, the team, led by Mohammed Nasiru Abbas, inspected the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) in Lugbe and Sahad Stores in Abuja. Abbas reported that the NNPCL station passed the compliance assessment, while Olajide Bamidele, Director of Weights and Measures, expressed satisfaction with the compliance of NNPCL’s pumps.
It also noted an overall compliance rate of about 95% among the inspected locations, with the exception of a weight scale at ShopRite along Lugbe Road, which was sealed-off due to alleged malfunction, until the scale is calibrated and deemed fit for use.
According to the government, this inspection exercise is set to extend across all 36 states of the federation, even as it announced that disciplinary actions and fines will be enforced for any infractions.
