SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria, has emphasized the need for alternative care for children.
SOS Country Director, Mr. Eghosa Erhumwunse, stated this on Monday at a two-day workshop in Abuja.
The workshop was meant to broaden the knowledge of various stakeholders on implementation guidelines for alternative care for children.
The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
He said the workshop is part of the implementation of the 3 years project funded by the EU to strengthen policies and guidelines for child rights.
The SOS boss who was represented by Ayodeji Adelokpo, Chief Programe Officer, said the organization is working with other stakeholders on the need to strengthen advocacy and the frame work for child protection.
“We are working with stakeholders to review the alternative care guideline for Nigerian child.
“Also, at this meeting, every stakeholder will know his duties and what to do as regards the care of the child.
Speaking further, he said all the 36 states have enacted the law, urging them to prioritize the protection of children.
Also speaking, North Central Zonal Coordinator, Child Protection Network (CPN) Nigeria, Kaneng Rwang-Pam, said the region has done excellently well at the level of documentation.
She said all stakeholders are on board, and are contributing their quota towards ensuring the safety of children.
“At this moment, we are at the point where action is being taken to reduce the number of children without parental care.”
She said every child belongs in a family setting, adding that all stakeholders are working assiduously to ensure that children abused by their parents or those roaming the streets have the care they need.
