The Nasarawa State Police Command say at least 11 persons were killed and more than 50 houses burnt during Friday’s clashes between Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities of Nasarawa Local Government Area.
SP Ramhan Nansel, spokesman of the Command, said in a statement issued on Saturday in Lafia that hoodlums carried out the attacks which was triggered following the earlier killing of two people.
“In the course of the attack, 11 people were killed, while about 52 houses were burnt in the two communities,” he said, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, had undertaken assessment visit to the affected communities.
During the visit, the police commissioner held a stakeholders’ meeting and urged the residents to be calm, law-abiding, and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to support ongoing investigations.
He assured that normalcy has been restored to the affected communities, while proactive measures have been taken to prevent recurrence of the violence.
Nansel said the CP directed Police tactical teams and investigative units to ensure the prompt identification, arrest, and prosecution of the perpetrators.
“To prevent any further breakdown of law and order, the Commissioner of Police has also directed the immediate reinforcement and sustained deployment of Police personnel to the affected areas,” he said.
He said the police were working with other security agencies to provide adequate security and restore lasting peace in the area.
