2 student cultists killed during attack on police team in Kwara

Date:

The Kwara Police Command has confirmed the killing of two suspected cult students during an attack on security detectives.

A statement from the command in Ilorin said that some cultists launched attacks on a team of detectives from the Special Tactical Squad Police, STS, FIB, Abuja on Saturday, thus causing chaos around the gate of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

The statement from command spokesman SP Ajayi Okasanmi explained that the team followed the trail of some cultists in the area.

However, it allayed fears among residents of the state polytechnic zone that the pandemonium experienced inside the area on Saturday arose as a result of the attack.

Remember that cultists attacked and killed a student at Kwara State University, Malete, on Friday.

The statement says that four of the cultists were arrested and dangerous weapons were recovered from the suspects.

He noted that some of the cultists were hiding in the Lajolo area of Kwara Polytechnic Ilorin, where a similar attack on a student named Idris Aderemi was unleashed at around 06:00 on Saturday.

“This motivated the visit to the area by the STS team.

“Surprisingly, the cultists who were already in an ambush attacked the police team, damaged the police Hummer bus, and inflicted a gunshot wound on the head of a police sergeant, Adebayo Abdulahi, attached to the STS team.

“In the ensuing melee, several students came out to block the road and impeded the free flow of traffic and burned tires on the road.

“The state Police Commissioner, Tuesday Assayomo, immediately dispatched police teams to the area to restore peace.

“However, two cultists, an Ahmed ‘m’ surname unknown, and a Musibau ‘m’ AKA Shaban, were arrested with an English pistol made from 3 live ammunition, 2 live cartridges and a pistol magazine.

“However, the police commissioner advised members of the public to go about their legal business without fear of attack or intimidation,” the statement read in part.

He said that calm was fully restored in the affected area, while security members were prepared to prevent any further acts of lawlessness.

In reaction to the development, the Polytechnic management described as misinformation that the institution’s campus was besieged by student protest.

The Public Relations Officer of the school, Mr. Yunus Abdulkadir, explained that the students of the institution were law-abiding citizens and would not engage in any illegal activity that would disrupt their academic careers.

“Meanwhile, the incident that occurred in the Lajolo community early Saturday morning was between the police and the Lajolo community and has nothing to do with the polytechnic students or the campus as the first semester CBT exams are being completed. taking place at this time on the Campus without any disturbance.

“However, the management of the polytechnic has magnanimously accepted the plea of the students who were unable to reach the campus before the lockdown in Oyun.”
