Ahead of the next year general elections, Community of Egbura ethnic group in Kaduna, Kaduna state has called on the political gladiators contesting for various positions in Toto LGA of Nasarawa state to eschew divisiveness and rancour.
Making the call through a statement issued in Kaduna yesterday, the community said the call became imperative because the LGA had had more than fair share of its own civil upheaval in recent years.
The statement said while the contestants were going about scouting for voters votes, they must keep at the back of their minds the fact that there would be winners and losers at the end of every contest.
It urged the contestants to confine their political rethorics to how they would endear developments such as good roads, functional hospitals, qualitiive education and electricity to the Area.
The statement recalled that “area has witnessed enough of violence and bloodletting!”
It said “it is noteworthy that the contest for elective office is contest for opportunity to bring development to the area rather than conflict.
According to the statement, “…all campaigns must be peaceful, devoid of violence and thugs, by all means. Politics must not be a do or die affair.
“Campaigns must be issues based, especially on how best to bring development to the area, by highlighting our developmental needs and what needs to be done to realize them. There should be no name calling, no acrimony.
“That there should be deliberate efforts by politicians to educate the electorate on how to vote and the quality of those that the electorate should look out to vote for, for the various offices. Indeed politicians must ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised.
“That campaign issues must include, Electric power supply to the area, Higher Institutions in the area, Sugar & Marble Industries in the area, Construction of the Kparache – Kanyehu – Ohyege – Loko – Udenin Ruwa – Doma – Lafia road, Construction of the Tudu/Uku – Katakpa road, Construction of the Gadabuke – Umuro – Zono – Ugya road and the Construction of the Toto – Ohizi/Ogette/Osewu – Omoko road.”
It called on the: “Village groups, Elders’ groups, and Youths’ groups” to engage the aspirants to make explanations in detail on how they intend to achieve sustainable peace and development in the area.”
